EUROPEAN CHEERLEADING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Sunshine CUP
http://www.cheerleadingni.com/sunshine.jpg
UCKA is a founder member of the European Cheerleading Association and through this membership alliance UKCA can offer selection to its own members to this fantastic annual International Championships. There are other cheerleading unions and associations worldwide but the Gov Body can only be a member of one and we have chosen to compete via the ECA route inline with UKCA guidance to present athletes at this level. This route offers a progressive, safe and successful competition pathway and because of this standard is popular with the majority of the European and world states.
For the opportunity to compete for Team UK at the European Championships all local teams must first compete at a UKCA National Event. The Judges and officials will select the regions top 4 teams to represent Team UK.
The Sunshine Cup was first introduced in 2011 to promote development at the junior level and it is a fabulous route to develop cheerleaders for the high level open Europeans and a great introduction to world level teams and skill level.
The Sunshine Cup is for level 2 & 3 juniors aged 8 and coming 9 in the year of competition and no older than 12 as at the year end of competition.
The Open Europeans start at Level 4/5+ .
Northern Ireland was proud to present its first team in 2011 at the Sunshine Cup:
Two Cheerleading Teams were selected Riada Rockets & Rathgael Ravens and Olympus Girls Club for Pom Dance. Riada Rockets were the only team to take up the offer and compete and placed a credible 5th.
In 2012 UKCA again had the delight in offering the following Northern Ireland Teams a place in the Sunshine Cup and to represent Team UK.
Dance Olympus Girls Club
Cheerleading Galaxy, Riada Rockets, Galway City Cougars
How does selection work:
Sunshine Cup is a Junior European event so the age group targeted are the 8-12 year olds.
Junior A's.
The top 3 or 4 teams are selected following results at a National Event and also based on the skill level of the squad, that is all round cheerleading skills. The team that was selected does not necesarily have to be the one that the squad sends to Europe, it can be any cheerleader within that age group 8-12yrs as per European rules from the squad selected. Cheerleaders often fall into the bracket that they are too young ( a young Jnr A not yet 8 and under) or will reach their 13th birthday by the end of the competition year and are then not eligible to compete.
We wish TEAM UK every success again this year and UK are the team to watch as the feedback last year from the European Body highlighted how UK are quickly bringing through talented grass root athletes.
This then affirms the need for the Sunshine Cup. A junior progressive pathway to Elite cheerleading. Thank you ECA for introducing this event to the competition calendar.
